Bushido Code of Ethics

Bushido, or the "Way of the Warrior", is the moral code of the samurai that was adapted to Shotokan Karate. This code represents the fundamental values that every practitioner should cultivate.
The nine principles of Bushido form the ethical foundation of our practice, guiding the development of character both inside and outside the dojo. Each principle represents an essential virtue for personal and spiritual growth.
Honour
Meiyo - Personal dignity and moral integrity that guide all the actions of the karateka
Loyalty
Chugi - Faithfulness to the principles, the dojo, the instructors and training partners
Sincerity
Makoto - Honesty with oneself and with others in all circumstances
Courage
Yu - Bravery to face challenges and defend the right principles
Kindness
Jin - Compassion and benevolence in dealing with all beings
Modesty
Kenkyo - Humility and simplicity, always recognising there is much to learn
Justice
Gi - Moral rectitude and fairness in all decisions and actions
Respect
Rei - Consideration and reverence for oneself, others and traditions
Self-control
Jisei - Mastery over one’s own emotions, impulses and reactions
