SKIF Shotokan Karate is a traditional style of karate founded by Master Hirokazu Kanazawa in 1977. It is based on the teachings of Master Gichin Funakoshi, who introduced karate to Japan. SKIF (Shotokan Karate International Federation) is a major global organization that promotes the teaching of Shotokan in an authentic way, focusing on correct technique and character development. This style values rigorous training, discipline, and respect, keeping the tradition of karate alive as a martial art and a way of life. SKIF has many practitioners in various countries and is recognized for its direct link to the original Shotokan masters.
7.Are your karate instructors qualified and certified?
All ASKKSA instructors hold national certifications from the National Karate Federation – Portugal (FNK-P), ranging from Grade I to Grade III. Our chief instructor, Shihan Jorge Freitas, has over 40 years of experience. We also have 4th and 5th DAN instructors, graduated by SKIF Canada, ensuring high-quality instruction.
8.What do I need to bring to my first karate class?
For your free trial classes, just wear comfortable athletic clothing (t-shirt and sweatpants or shorts). You'll train barefoot. If you decide to continue, you'll need a karate-gi (uniform), which we can help you obtain. We'll also provide guidance on proper care and etiquette.
9.Is ASKKSA affiliated with official karate organizations?
Yes, ASKKSA is officially affiliated with FNK-P (Federação Nacional de Karate Portugal), AKRAM (Associação de Karate da Região Autónoma da Madeira), and recognized by DRJD (Regional Directorate of Youth and Sport). 11.How long does it take to get a black belt in karate?
Typically 4-6 years of consistent training for adults, though this varies by individual dedication and natural aptitude. At ASKKSA, we focus on proper technique, character development, and deep understanding rather than rushing through ranks. Our grading system follows traditional Japanese standards, and we're proud to have formed many black belts who exemplify the true spirit of karate.
